Our Pastor

Reverend Michael E Caldwell

Reverend Michael Caldwell has been an ordained elder for more than thirty years. He holds a Master’s degree in Theology from Perkins.  He has served in churches small to large, holding positions from an associate pastor to a head minister.  His largest church was Deer Park United Methodist Church with an average attendance just under 500. His last three appointments were First United Methodist Church of Rusk (6 years), Lissie United Methodist Church (6 years), and Wesley FUMC, Clute (3 years).

Reverend Caldwell grew up on the Gulf Coast in League City and Galveston.  He says that down there, people just call their pastors by their first name or Preacher, so you have the choice of Michael or Preacher.

He and Joyce will celebrate their 24th anniversary on July 9, 2018. They have three children; two boys (married) and the youngest, a girl, is not married.  Their names are:  Hercules & Patty Estrada, Achilles & Shay Estrada, and Athena Estrada.

The Reverend’s hobbies include creating stories for worship and children’s Christmas programs.  He has used multi-media in his last three churches in worship and looks forward to using it in his ministry here at FUMC.

No stranger to a lake area ministry, Reverend Caldwell has served at Cedar Creek Lake, UMC in the Northwest District. It had a larger population than Hemphill because of its location, but it had retiring couples and weekenders as part of the laity.  He looks forward joining us here at FUMC Hemphill.
