First United Methodist Church Hemphill

UM Army 2017 (9-15 July )

Hemphill First United Methodist Church hosted the UM Army 9-15 July 2017. During this week, youth and councilors were available to make minor repairs to homes within Sabine County. We hosted 35 young adults, 3 college students and 17 adult leaders.  We are very proud of the impact they had on our community.

UM Army participants are High School and College Age Youth groups from a collection of churches. A ratio of 2 adults for every 5 youth is necessary. Youth must have completed the 8th grade to participate. A typical U. M. ARMY mission is 50 – 100 people comprised of youth groups from several different churches. Work teams (4 or more youth and one adult) are assigned on the first day, mixing people from different churches. This intentional mixing of participants is done in order to form one group, one community. Each youth pays a registration fee of $250 which covers all costs for the week, including food and building materials.

UM Army Anniversary link has an article by John Branch who was our on-site leader in 2017.

UM Army 2016 (10-16 July )

Hemphill First United Methodist Church hosted the UM Army 10-16 July 2016. During this week, youth and councilors were available to make minor repairs to homes within Sabine County. We hosted 39 youths and 22 adult leaders.  Sixteen local job sites were completed during the week. We are very proud of the impact they had on our community.

Take a look at what they did here.

UM Army provides Christ-centered missions that serve communities across the US. It provides and promotes spiritual growth and leadership development in youth and young adults.  Registration for each youth is $250. That money is then used to buy materials used in the UM Army mission activities (wheelchair ramps, home repair, and so on). Youth participants must have completed 8th grade.  UM Army requires 2 adult chaperones per every 5 youths.
